LAKE VIEW - Mass of the Christian burial for Norbert John Berning of Lake View will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake.

Mr. Berning, 92, formerly of the Arcadia and Breda areas, died Sunday, Aug. 9, at Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, his home the last two years.

The Rev. John McGuirk will preside at the Mass. Lector will be Mr. Berning's son, Robert Berning. Gift bearers will be Haylee Scheffler and Dyan Scheffler. Casket bearers will be Jake Schwaller, Grant Sholty, Jamie Renze, Matt Scheffler, Cory Weber and Haylee Scheffler. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. Burial with military honors by the Breda American Legion will be in Carroll Cemetery. Visitation starts at 5 and St. Joseph Parish will hold a Christian wake service at 6 tonight at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.

A son of William and Anna Marie (Jasper) Berning, he was born April 16, 1917, at Breda and attended rural school and St. Bernard School in Breda.

He and Marjorie Miller were married Sept. 1, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Carroll with Monsignor P.J. Lynch officiating. Mr. Berning was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Force from 1941 to 1946. He farmed between Arcadia and Breda and was a track supervisor for Chicago and North Western Railroad for 25 years until retiring in 1973. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish and Breda American Legion and enjoyed the Chicago Cubs baseball team, cooking, gardening and canning tomatoes and cucumbers.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, of Lake View; two sons: Robert Berning of Carlisle and Keith Berning of Lake View; a daughter, Sandy Weber, and husband, Mark, of Early; six grandchildren: Amy Scheffler, Cari Sholty, Jamie Renze, Jake Schwaller, Molly Vondrak and Cory Weber; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, William Berning Jr., and his wife, Betty, of Fort Dodge; two sisters: Mary Ann Janning and husband John of Carroll and Agnes Tigges of Des Moines; and three sisters-in-law: Marian Berning of Breda, Viola Berning of Carroll and Dorthea Berning of Cedar Falls.

Mr. Berning was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Albert, Francis, Laverne, Wilfred and Lawrence; and a sister, Leota Reiff.2

Marjorie Berning
Marjorie Lavine Berning, age 86, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Blackhawk Life Care Center in Lake View where she has made her home for the past two years. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 3, 2011 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake with Fr. John McGuirk as Celebrant. Lector for the Mass will be her son Robert Berning. Gift bearers will be Haylee and Dylan Scheffler. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M, on Sunday where there will be a Christian Wake held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Monday to lie in state until the time of service. An honor guard will be formed at the church by the St. Anthony Nurses Alumni Association. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Jake Schwaller, Jamie Renze, Cory Weber, Grant Sholty, Matt Scheffler, and Haylee Scheffler. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.

Born on May 13, 1924, at Carroll, Iowa, she was the daughter of Milford Irvin and Carolyn Lucille (Slechta) Miller. She grew up south east of Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1941 and was class salutatorian. She then attended Gregg Business College in Chicago and later graduated from the Antonian School of Nursing in Carroll. She was married to Norbert John Berning on September 1, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Carroll with Msgr. P.J. Lynch as Celebrant. The couple farmed between Arcadia and Breda until they moved to Lake View in 1969.

Marjorie worked for many years as an insurance secretary for doctors in Carroll and Sac City. In her younger years she worked as a proofreader for the Carroll Daily Times Herald. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake. In her spare time Marjorie enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving are her two sons: Robert Berning of Carlisle, Iowa, and Keith Berning of Lake View, Iowa; a daughter Sandy Weber and her husband Mark of Early, Iowa; six grandchildren: Amy Scheffler (Matt), Cari Sholty (Grant), Jamie Renze (Jamie), Jake Schwaller (Sarah), Molly Vondrak (Mike), and Cory Weber (Barb); thirteen great grandchildren; a brother-in-law William Berning, Jr. and his wife Betty of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; five sisters-in-law: Mary Ann Janning and her husband John of Carroll, Agnes Tigges of Des Moines, and Marian Berning of Breda, Viola Berning of Carroll, and Dorthea Berning of Cedar Falls; a step sister-in-law Naomi Ludwig of Mt. Marian Berning, age 93, of Breda, died Sunday, May 07, 2017, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, 2017, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The celebrant will be Fr. Gary Snyder. Music will be by Marilyn Hundling and the St. Bernard’s Choir. Lector will be Don Masching, Gift Bearers will be Marian’s Great-Grandchildren. Eucharistic Minister will be Judy Mayer. Casket Bearers will be Marty Rath, Terry Rath, Joe Greving, Frankie Greving, Jeff Kjosa, Troy Meyersick, and Pete Zimmerman. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the funeral mass.

Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 4 p.m. on Thursday where there will be a rosary prayed at 5 p.m., and a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Visitation will resume at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda from 9-10 a.m. Friday morning. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church to be directed to St. Bernard’s Church or the St. Anthony Hospital Foundation.

Marian was born on January 28, 1924, at Carroll, Iowa, to Fred and Mayme (Kennebeck) Masching. She went through school at Sts. Peter and Paul and did domestic work before being employed at the Council Oak Grocery Store. On February 5, 1945, Marian was united in marriage to Albert Berning at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll by Fr. Schenkelberg.

The couple farmed four miles west of Breda, and retired to Breda in 1978. Marian was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and Ladies Guild, Rosary makers, and quilters groups. She was a 4-H leader, and member of the R.S.V.P. Group, as well as the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed her house plants, quilting, baking crocheting, making rosaries, and playing cards.

Marian is survived by her daughter: Janice (Jim) Kjosa of Omaha, NE; grandchildren: Marty Rath (fiancé Vicki Foley) of Auburn, Terry (Melissa) Rath of Auburn, Tammy (Pete) Zimmerman of Spencer, Renee (Troy) Meyersick of Omaha, NE, Jeff (Lourdes) Kjosa of Dallas, TX, Joe (Deana) Greving of Johnston, and Frankie (Michelle) Greving of Carroll, and good friends Linda Rath, Sheri Dirkx, Rosie Wernimont, and Deb Tiefenthaler. Also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren, 2 step-great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandsons; her sisters: Viola Langel, Julie Schmitz, and Helen Stevens all of Carroll; brothers: Alvin (Ruthie) Masching of Colorado Springs, CO, and Marvin (Judy) Masching of Worthington, MN, and many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Marian was preceded in death by her husband Albert in 1998, daughter Patty Greving in 1997, son-in-law: Robert Rath; parents, and parents-in-law: Wm. and Anne Berning; her sister: Irene in infancy, Alice Stitz, brother: Leon (Dorothy) Masching; and brothers-in-law: Joe Stitz, Alver Schmitz, Marvin Stevens, and Simon Langel.

Laverne Berning
Laverne was born March 6, 1921, in Breda, Iowa, the son of William and Anna (Jasper) Berning. He served his Country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. On July 21, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorothea M. Ericksen in Danbury, IA. He was employed at Fuller Roofing for 20 years and then Roskamp Manufacturing for 5 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49.

Laverne is survived by his wife, Dorothea of Cedar Falls; daughter, Kathy Berning of Cedar Falls; sons, Randy (Patty) Berning and Tim (fiancee Nancy) Berning, all of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; four brothers, Norbert (Marg) Berning of Lake View, Wilfred Berning of Mapleton, Francis Berning of Carroll and Bill (Betty) Berning Ft. Dodge; and sisters, Agnes Tigges of Des Moines and Mary Ann (John) Janning of Carroll.

Laverne died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert and Lawrence Berning and sister, Leota Reiff.

MAPLETON - Services for Wilfred L. Berning, 86, of Mapleton were Dec. 29, 2008, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with Msgr. Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Mapleton. Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton was in charge of arrangements.

He died Dec. 24 at a Sioux City hospital.

Wilfred Leo Berning was born March 17, 1922, at Breda, son of William and Anna (Jasper) Berning. He grew up in the Breda area, where he farmed with his dad. He came to Anthon in 1948, where he was self-employed as a carpenter.

On May 5, 1949, he married Betty Jean Downing in Anthon. The family moved to Mapleton in 1970, where Wilfred was employed at Maple Valley High School, retiring in 1990. Betty died Dec. 29, 1997.

Wilfred was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton. He was an honorary, lifetime member of Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking, but the greatest happiness in his life came from his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors left to cherish memories of Wilfred include a son and wife, Mike and Lori Berning of Anthon, and three daughters and their husbands: Mary and Don Davis of Mapleton, Deb and Rick Swanger of Battle Creek and Barb and Dean Moser of Danbury.

Also surviving are 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives: Norbert and Margie Berning of Lake View and Bill and Betty Berning of Fort Dodge; and two sisters: Agnes Tigges of Des Moines and Mary Ann Jannings and husband, John, of Carroll.

Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Abby Davis; four brothers: Albert, Laverne, Larry and Francis; and a sister, Leota.3

Francis “Franny” Berning, 82, of Carroll, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at his residence of an apparent heart condition.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Monday, April 17, 2006, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be the Rev. Timothy Schott. Lector will be Robyn Berning. Gift bearers will be Don, Koleta, Greg and Megan Berning. Mass servers will be Colby and Jacob Hannasch. Eucharistic ministers will be Edra Broich and Diane Hannasch. Honorary casket bearers will be Joe Bivona, Brian Pottebaum, Nate Pottebaum, Robyn Berning, Megan Berning, Greg Berning, Joshua Rungee, Kasi Silguero, Briley Berning, Gavin Berning and Todd Pottebaum. Burial will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. There will be a Christian wake service at 3 p.m. St. Lawrence Parish and a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left for St. Anthony Hospice.

Mr. Berning was born Aug. 11, 1923, at rural Breda, the son of William and Anna (Jasper) Berning. He spent his younger years in the Breda community and graduated from St. Bernard High School.

He entered the U.S. Navy in March 1944 and served during World War II as a seaman first class in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in May 1946.

On May 17, 1948, he was married to Doris Christiansen at St. Rose of Lima Church in Denison. The couple made their home in Carroll.

Mr. Berning had been employed by the former Boje Construction Company and later owned and operated Berning Construction Company for many years. He was then employed as a maintenance supervisor for the Crouse Cartage Company until his retirement. In retirement he was employed part time with the grounds department at Swan Lake State Park.

He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, was a parish usher, and a member of the Carroll American Legion. Mr. Berning enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed woodworking, camping and watching sporting events on television.

Survivors include his children, Jean Bivona of Carroll, Mary Jo Pottebaum and her husband Dennis of Minneapolis, Minn., Don Berning and his wife Koleta of Ames, Roxann Perry and her husband Steve of Cypress, Texas, Thomas Berning and his wife Cheryl of Boone, and Cory Berning and his wife Tina of Marion; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Norbert Berning and his wife Marjorie of Lake View, Wilfred Berning of Mapleton, and Bill Berning and his wife Betty of Ft. Dodge; and sisters, Agnes Tigges of Des Moines, and Mary Ann Janning and her husband John of Carroll.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris Berning, in April 1996; brothers, Albert, Lavern, and Lawrence Berning; and sister, Leota Reiff.2
