Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Mass Servers will be Seth Gehling and Sosie Gehling. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Sister Joann Gehling F.S.P.A. Gift Bearers will be: Ryan Hart, Brad Hart, Alyssa Willenborg, Bryant Gehling and Chad Gehling. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Mary Jo Berning, Margene Heisterkamp and Georgia Von Arx. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9 a.m. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for St. Anthony Hospice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll.

Born on July 24, 1930 at Carroll, Iowa, Edward was the son of Herman and Genevieve (Gross) Gehling. He spent his entire lifetime in the Carroll area and attended Sts. Peter and Paul School. Following his schooling he helped his family with their farming operation. On November 22, 1952 he married Lorraine Berning at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. Following their marriage he farmed in the Carroll area and in 1959 purchased a farm near Willey. In 1997 Ed and Lorraine moved to Carroll but he continued to go to the family farm every day up until his illness. Ed enjoyed playing cards, farming, having coffee with his friends, and participating in the fall pheasant hunt each year. He loved his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. This Thanksgiving, Ed and Lorraine celebrated their 60 years of marriage together. He was a member of the Carroll County Cattle and Pork Producers, Iowa Farm Bureau, former member of Knights of Columbus, former member of St. Mary’s Parish in Willey, and currently a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lorraine Gehling of Carroll; his children: Janice Gehling of Carroll, Jean Gehling of Shenandoah, and Matt Gehling of Carroll; his grandchildren: Ryan (Melissa) Hart of Boone, Brad Hart of Ames, Alyssa (Matt) Willenborg of Dedham, Bryant Gehling of Dedham and Chad Gehling of Carroll; his great-grandchildren: Collin Willenborg and Kaleb Gehling; his sisters: Rita Anstoeter of Carroll, Rose Ocken of Carroll, and Sister Joann Gehling F.S.P.A. of Hiawatha; his brothers: Bob (JoAnn) Gehling of Carroll, and Jerry (Kathy) Gehling of Phoenix, AZ; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Lillian Gehling of Grand Meadow, MN, Linda Gehling of Carroll, Delores (Bob) Nagl of Carroll, Bonnie Rasmussen of Newton, Rita (Merlin) Wuebker of Milford, Clarence Berning of Carroll, Lois (Alfred) Hoffman of Coon Rapids, and Leo (Mary Jo) Berning of Arcadia; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Born on November 22, 1931, on her family’s farm west of Breda, she was the daughter of Leo and Frances (Jasper) Berning. She grew up on the farm and graduated from St. Bernard’s Catholic High School in 1949. Lois was married to Alfred J. Hoffman on December 27, 1951, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda by Fr. John Hausman. The couple made their home northwest of Coon Rapids where they farmed until 1988 when they retired and moved into town. Lois was an active member of Annunciation Parish in Coon Rapids where she served on the church guild. Lois was famous for her pies and always made them on Saturday afternoon for Sunday after church. She was an immaculate homemaker and always kept a spotless house. Family was most important to Lois, and she loved having her grandchildren come to stay. She enjoyed her daily walks on the nature trail and never missed writing in her journal. Her kind and loving spirit will truly be missed by her family and all who knew her.

Lois is survived by; a daughter Patricia Oliver (Mark) of Coon Rapids; twins: Diane Halbur (Roger Slater) of Glidden and Dennis Hoffman (Lois) of Coon Rapids; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two brothers: Clarence Berning of Carroll and Leo Berning (Mary Jo) of Arcadia; her in-laws: Merlin Wuebker of Milford, Eugene Hoffman (Carol) of Carroll, Lorraine Klocke of Carroll, and Dorothy Hoffman of Dedham; and many nieces and nephews.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Frances Berning; her mother and father-in-law John and Theresa Hoffman; and two sisters: Lorraine Gehling (Edward) and Rita Wuebker; sister-in-law Sally Berning and her husband Alfred Hoffman on June 18, 2015.

Born on September 24, 1924, in Dedham, he was the son of John and Theresa (Zitzlsperger) Hoffman. He grew up on his family's farm northeast of Dedham and attended St. Joseph Catholic School. Following his schooling he worked on his father's farm. He was married to Lois Berning on December 27, 1951, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda by Fr. John Hausman. The couple made their home northwest of Coon Rapids where they farmed until 1988. Alfred farmed from 1952 to 1988 and he drove a school bus from 1966 to 1999. Alfred and Lois moved into Coon Rapids in 1988. In retirement he worked for Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities mowing city properties. Alfred was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church since 1952 and the church Men's Club. He enjoyed fishing, walking, and putting together jig saw puzzles. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Alfred is survived by his wife Lois of Coon Rapids; a daughter Patricia Oliver and her husband Mark of Coon Rapids; twins: Diane Halbur of Glidden and Dennis Hoffman and his wife Lois of Coon Rapids; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; a brother Eugene Hoffman and his wife Carol of Carroll; a sister Lorraine Klocke of Carroll; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Hoffman of Dedham, Rita Webker and her husband Merlin of Milford, Lorraine Gehling of Carroll; brothers-in-law: Clarence Berning of Carroll and Leo Berning and his wife Mary Jo of Arcadia; and many nieces and nephews.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Alvin Hoffman and his wife Clara and Louis Hoffman.

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Donald Willis, 61, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Marcus, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, following an auto accident near Spencer, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.

Donald Omer Willis was born on Jan. 13, 1946, at Harper, Iowa, the son of Joseph Clark and Irene (Hammes) Willis. On Sept. 26, 1970, Don and Suzanne Delperdang were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Don farmed in rural Marcus for 21 years and worked in the construction business for more than 40 years. Don and Suzanne most recently made their home in Spirit Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne of Spirit Lake; a daughter, Cassie Willis and her husband, Jeff Fulmer of Marion, Iowa; two sons, Ted Willis and his wife, Julie of Fort Collins, Colo., and Joe Willis of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Brennan and Willis Fulmer of Marion, and Ben and Grace Willis of Fort Collins; four brothers, Kenny (Jan Willis of Eldridge, Iowa, Denny (Barb) Willis of South Sioux City, Bob (Joy) Willis of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Tom (Barb) Willis of Davenport, Iowa; and a sister, Lorene (Donnie) Altenhofen of Eldridge, Iowa.

Don was preceded in death by his parents.

Don graduated from St. Elizabeth’s High School in Harper, Iowa and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. Don served in the US Army and was a Vietnam veteran.

Don was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Spirit Lake. He’s been a member of the Knights of Columbus since age 18. Don was a member of the Marcus Jaycees and the Marcus city council. He took an interest in hunting, fishing, boating, card playing and piloting aircraft.1
