BREDA- Merlin Schelle, 86, of Breda, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. Fr. Joe Dillinger will officiate.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2009, at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda, where a rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and there will be a Christian wake service by the St. Bernard par-ish at 5 p.m. Burial, with Military honors by the Breda American Legion, will be in the St. Bernard Cemetery at Breda Lectors will be granddaughters: Tonya Erickson and Jennifer Peterson. Gift bearers will be grand-children: Schuyler Loneman, Dominic Loneman, Erin Peterson and Madelyn Schelle. Mass servers will be Matt Wessling and Jake Buelt. Eucharistic ministers will be Mary Schelle, Norma Kenne-beck and Ronald Schelle.
Casket bearers will be grandchildren: Michelle Felder, Kara Kidney, Billy Paul, and Nicholas Schelle; a nephew, Russell Schelle; and a friend, Rick Mueggenberg. Honorary Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

A son of Charles and Mary Ann (Goecke) Schelle, he was born March 21, 1923, at Breda. He at-tended St. Bernard School and then worked for his Dad on the farm. He entered the U.S. Army in September 1943, and served during World War II with the 79th Infantry Division at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe, receiving Four Bronze Battle Stars and the Pur-ple Heart Medal. He was a prisoner of war in Germany from January 11, 1945, until March 27, 1945, and was honorably discharged in November 1945, at the rank of Corporal.

On July 3, 1945, he married Mildred Baumhover at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. The couple farmed in the Manson and Halbur communities, moving first moved to their farm west of Breda and then to their home in Breda in 1978. They purchased the Breda Hardware Store, which they operated for several years.

He was a member of St. Bernard Parish, the Breda American Legion and the American Ex-Prisoners of War Association.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Schelle of Breda; his children: Kathy Funk of Trinity, N.C., Barb Kidney and husband Kyle of Parderville, Wis., Linda Johnston and husband Dennis of Carroll, Charlie Schelle and wife Karen of Ft. Dodge and Mike Schelle and his wife Bonnie of Boone; 15 grand-children; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters: Norma Kennebeck of Breda, Jean Thelen and husband Lenus of Carroll and Lois Roets of Des Moines; brothers: Nyle Schelle and wife Mary of Glidden and Ronald Schelle and wife Pat of Pfafftown, N.C; and sister-in-law, Rosella Schelle of Carroll.

Mr. Schelle was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Wilmer and Wayne Schelle; broth-ers-in-law: Fred Kennebeck and Phil Roets; and a sister-in-law, Marita Schelle.

Nyle Schelle, age 85, of Glidden passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, at Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church Glidden with Father Andrew Hoffmann as celebrant. Music will be by the St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church Choir with Mary Ross as organist and Mike Bolton as Soloist. Lector for the Mass will be Jerry Mathine. Casket bearers will be Jim Gaul, Lynn Stork, Nik McCallum, Todd Pettitt, Josie Espenhover, and Al Nepple. Burial will be in the St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.

Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 4:30 P.M. on Monday where there will be a Rosary at 5:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be left at the church or funeral home to be given to various local charities in Nyle’s name. Born on November 16, 1931, near Breda, Iowa, on his family farm, he was the son of Charles and Mary (Goecke) Schelle. Nyle grew up on the farm and attended school at St. Bernard School in Breda. Following school he farmed with his parents and was married on August 9, 1955, to Mary Schmid at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Nyle and Mary farmed near Earling. The couple then moved to a farm near Breda where they farmed until 1977 when they moved to Glidden. Nyle went to work at the Egg Plant in Glidden until it closed. He then went to work for a company in Sac City building machinery. During retirement, Nyle worked several seasonal jobs around the Glidden and Coon Rapids area. Nyle was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the accordion and organ by ear, and he played the organ at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church until 2016. Nyle and Mary enjoyed dancing, which took them to different states. They also entertained at local nursing homes. In his spare time, Nyle made thousands of rosaries for various missions. Nyle was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church.

Nyle is survived by his wife, Mary Schelle of Glidden; his two daughters: Jeanine LaBreck of Colton, SD and Laurie McCallum (Curt) of Cedar Falls; one son: Gerry Schelle of Glidden; two grandchildren: Brandie Davidson of Fort Worth, TX and Nik McCallum of Cedar Falls; a sister Lois Roets of Des Moines; a brother Ron Schelle (Pat) of Pfafftown, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

Nyle was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Norma Kennebeck and Jean Thelen; three brothers: Merlin, Wilmer, and Wayne.1
