Steve Nieland, 58 of Arcadia, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2016, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Fr. Gary Snyder. Mass servers will be Aaron Schreck, Brett Klusman, and Carter White. Music will be by Marilyn Hundling and the St. Bernard’s Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be John Wittry. Gift Bearers will be Steve’s children: Lindsy Seidl, Amanda Meister, and Derek Nieland. Eucharistic Ministers will be Steve’s sisters Amy Schreck and Lori Snyder. Casket Bearers will be: Tom Stork, Jeff Christianson, Lynn “Whip” Wuebker, Dan “Boone” Hermsen, Bruce Vonnahme, Curtis Stork and Billy Grote. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call at St. Bernard's Church after 4 p.m. on Friday where there will be a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be held from noon until 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left for the Arcadia Fire Department. Born on August 27, 1957, in Carroll, Iowa, Steve was the son of Gene and Connie (Loneman) Nieland. He spent most of his lifetime in the Breda area where he graduated from St. Bernard’s High School with the Class of 1975. On July 25, 1981 Steve was united in marriage to Joleen Knobbe and the couple had 3 children.
Steve farmed in the Breda area for several years with his father Gene and brother Dan. Following his career in farming, he managed the Breda golf course and most recently owned and operated Hunters Den in Arcadia with Heidi Roetman.
When his children were young Steve enjoyed coaching their sports teams. At that time he also played in several softball and basketball leagues. Steve was an avid bowler and was active in bowling leagues in Carroll and Wall Lake. He also enjoyed golfing, telling jokes, and showing off his card tricks. Steve loved people; always enjoyed socializing and spending time with his many friends and family, especially his grandchildren. Steve was a big fan of the Iowa State Cyclones and the New York Yankees.
Steve is survived by his significant other, Heidi Roetman of Arcadia; his children: Lindsy Seidl and her husband Todd and their children Wade and Micah of Ankeny, Amanda Meister and her husband Matt and their children Coy and Emerson of Breda, and Derek Nieland of West Des Moines; his father, Gene (Becky) Nieland of Breda; his siblings: Dan (Karen) Nieland of Breda, Kevin “Herm” (Deb) Nieland of Breda, Jan (Russ) Stork of Waterloo, NE, Lori (Randy) Snyder of Breda, Mary Jo (Frank) Wellenstein of Omaha, Amy (Kevin) Schreck of Roselle, Jill (Kevin) White of Council Bluffs, and Joni (Mike) Klusman of Honey Creek; Steve is also survived by Heidi’s children: Tyler (Jenny) Roetman and their children, Siddalee and Ellyce of Carroll, Tiff Roetman and her children, Kailee and Kaiden of Breda, Britt Roetman and her children Hunter and Liam of Iowa City, Brooke Roetman and friend Chris Mundt and son Cooper of Manning and Jordan Roetman of Iowa City; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother Connie Nieland in 1994.
