Pallbearers were Maurice Nieland, Leonard Nieland, Kenneth Nieland, Lester Nieland, Gary Handlos and Marvin Brandl. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, under the direction of the Sharp Funeral Home of Carroll.

Ione Catherine Nieland, 75, of East Moline, Illinois, died Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Genesis Medical Center – Silvis Campus, Silvis, Illinois.

Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2017, at St. John Catholic Church, Arcadia, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at St. John Church Cemetery, Arcadia, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Catholic Relief Services. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ione was born on Feb. 10, 1942, in Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Caroline (Staiert) Nieland. She grew up with her siblings, Ruth, Mary, Marlene/Sister Irene, Leonard, Maurice and Alma on the family farm near Arcadia, IA, where she attended St. John’s School prior to attending Kuemper High School in Carroll, IA.

In September of 1959, she entered the Poor Clare Monastery in Omaha, Nebraska, where she completed temporary vows.

In 1975, while teaching in parochial schools in Idaho, she co-authored “Touching God,” a book on children’s liturgies. She committed her life to church ministry. She worked in church leadership in education, administration, and pastoral care. She was certified as a spiritual director at the University of San Francisco.

She obtained a Master of Arts Degree in Psychology and Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master of Arts Degree in Religion and Pastoral Care from the Iliff School of Theology, Denver University. She worked for several years as Director of Single Adult Ministry for the Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado.

In 1989, she was certified as a chaplain by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. She worked for many years as a hospital chaplain. She was appointed by the Bishop of Peoria, Illinois, to work for the Marriage Tribunal in 1999.

Ione was a member of the American Diabetes Association. Throughout her life, she found peace, joy and inspiration in nature and contemplation. Her work was meaningful and helpful to others.

Survivors include her siblings, Ruth King, Conway, South Carolina, Mary (Richard) Baumhover, Carroll, Iowa, Sr. Irene FSPA/Marlene Nieland, Carroll, Iowa, Leonard (Naomi) Nieland, Pacific Junction, Iowa, Maurice (Sue) Nieland, Okemos, Michigan and Alma (David) Gaul, Bettendorf, Iowa; friends, Lois Tressler, Arvada, Colorado, Patrice McGee, Oakland, California, Rosli and Gary Gier, Soda Springs, Idaho, and Ruth Lotter, Milan, Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held for Virgil Raymond Bierl, 78, of St. Benedict, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Benedict Catholic Church, with the Rev. Lynn Bruch officiating. Burial will be at St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion, Andrew Post #428 of Wesley. Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. today at the Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a 3 p.m. rosary, a 7:30 p.m. parish prayer service and an 8:30 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary.

Virgil Raymond Bierl was born March 6, 1918, at the family farm North of Templeton and died Sunday (May 26, 1996) at the Kossuth County Hospital, Algona. He was one of 11 children born to George H. and Mary (Irlmeier) Bierl. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Templeton.

Virgil served five years and nine months in the United States Army during World War II with the 34th and 83rd Infantry Divisions in the United States and Europe.

On Feb. 10, 1947, Virgil married Irene Angeline Nieland at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda. During the first years of their marriage, they farmed near Auburn, Iowa, and Hayfield, Minn. In 1951, they assumed ownership of Bierl's Locker Plant in St. Benedict, which he operated until 1981.

For 30 years, Bierl Lockers served the people of Kossuth and Hancock counties with custom slaughter services, cured and smoked meats. For many years, he also operated a hardware and feed business with the locker plant. Virgil and Irene retired and remained living in St. Benedict. He was a member of a four-person country western/polka band known as The Harmonizers.

Virgil was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #952 where he was a Fourth Degree Knight and a member of the American Legion Post #428 of Wesley.

Survivors include his wife, Irene, of St. Benedict; sons, Russell of Ankeny, and Ronald of Nora Springs; daughters, Mary Grohmann of Omaha, Neb; Margaret Bowman of Waunakee, Wis., and Yvonne S. Hemmer of Sioux Falls, S.D; as well as 16 grandchildren; and one sister, Irma Osterholt of Carroll.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and five sisters.3

Barbara Ruth Nieland was born February 20, 1929, in Galva, Iowa, the daughter of George and Mary (Dahm) Reis. She grew up in the Early area, graduating from Early High School in 1947.

On February 10, 1948, Barbara was united in marriage to Cyril Nieland at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm north of Sac City where they raised their family of seven children. They continued to live on the farm their entire married life.

Barbara was employed for 17 years as a home health care aide for Sac County Public Health. Her boundless energy, strong work ethic, integrity, compassionate nature, and strength of character will be sorely missed.

A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, Barbara was active in the Ladies’ Guild. She also was a master quilter and enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and baking in her spare time.

Survivors include her husband, Cyril: six children, Steve (Rose) Nieland, Jerry (Deb) Nieland, Shirley Mitchell, Bruce (Robin) Nieland, all of Newall, Ann (Randy) Bonde of Alexander, and Brenda (Coby) Shank of Clive; a daughter-in-law, Ina Rae Nieland of Carroll; 16 grandchildren; and sic great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Herbert (June) Reis of Early; three sisters. Florence (Wayne) Cook of Steuart, Charlotte (Russ) Latta of Ames. And Janet (Duane) Luchtel of Grain Valley, MO; a sister-in-law, Mary Reis of Omaha, NE; a brother-in-law, Duane Ludwig of Sioux Rapids; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jean Ann Nieland; her parents; three brothers, Joe, John, and Paul Reis; and three sisters, Grace Ludwig, Mary Ann Bain, and Rita Mitchell.

William L. "Bill" Jensen, Jr.
William L. “Bill” Jensen Jr., 79, passed away at Jones Regional Medical Center Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, following a long illness. Visitation will be one hour before the 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, service at St. Patrick Catholic Church. A mass of the Christian burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Cahill as celebrant. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Jolene; and four children, Vickie Bunting, Curtiss (Julie) Jensen, John (Robin) Jensen and Joseph Jensen. Survivors also include nine grandchildren, Dawn Miller Ovel, Daniel Miller, Ryan and Christopher Bunting, Matthew Jensen and Jill Jensen Carlisle, Jacquline and Alyssa Jensen and Jordin Jensen; step grandchildren, Caleb Bickel and Caitlin Bickel; great-grandchildren, Emma, Olivia and Claire Ovel and Aiden and Lily Carlisle; and many nieces and nephews. Bill is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul and Connie Nieland, Cyril Nieland, Della Nieland, Ken and Charlotte Carter and Mary Jensen Klohs Hughes.

Bill was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Valerie Jensen Miller; his parents, William and Hilda Jensen; two brothers; two sisters; and son-in-law, Marlin Bunting.

William Laurence Jensen Jr. was born Jan. 21, 1934, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of William Peter Jensen and Hilda Pietig Jensen. He received his education in Carroll, Iowa. On Feb. 10, 1954, he was united in marriage to Jolene Nieland at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda, Iowa. Bill and Jolene moved to Anamosa in 1956. Bill was employed by Iowa Manufacturing for two years, followed by 39 years at the Iowa State Reformatory. Bill was also a professional photographer for 30 years and truly loved taking photos, especially using family as test subjects.

Bill and Jolene wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for many years, enjoying every minute away from Iowa’s snow, cold and biting wind. Bill had a 125 Suzuki motorcycle and loved using it for errands, or a leisurely ride through the park. More than anything, Bill loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Marlind J. Haberl
Marlind J. Haberl, 53, of Denison, died Wednesday, July 30, at Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Lake City.

He farmed for several years and for the past 15 years he did construction masonry.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, August 1, at Holy Spirit church in Carroll with the Rev. Mervin Hood as celebrant. Karl Bruch will be lector. Burial, under the direction of the Twit Funeral Home of Carroll, will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Casket bearers will be brothers, Alvin, Donald, Bernie, Erwin, LeRoy and Ed.

Mr. Haberl is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Haberl, Carroll: the following children: Mark, Mary Lou, Terry, Gail, Luke and Cory; brothers Alvin, Farnhamville; Donald, Maple River; Bernie, Carroll, Erwin, Maple River, LeRoy, Carroll, and Ed, Carroll; sisters Mrs. Leo (Darlene) Willenborg, Manning; Mrs. Alvin (Norma Jean) Anthofer, Willey; Mrs. Edmund (Joleen) Bauer, Sac City, and Mrs. Art (Rita) Bruch, Arcadia, and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild.

Mr. Haberl was born at Manning on January 14, 1933, a son of Ben F. and Genevieve Daniel Haberl. He received his education at Manning and in St. Joseph school at Dedham.1
