Clarence John Kraus
Holy Angel’s church, Roselle, was more than filled at funeral services yesterday morning for Clarence J. Kraus, 28, who died Sunday afternoon of injuries received in an automobile accident Thursday evening.

The Rev. Bernard Eischeid, pastor, was celebrant of solemn requiem mass. Other officers of the mass were: The Rev. H. J. Dries, Willey, deacon; the Rev. Joseph Achatz. Manning, subdeacon; and the Rev. Bernard Greving, West Bend, master of ceremonies. Marvin Eischeid was banner bearer.

Fr. Dries and Fr. Greving conducted graveside rites at St. Mary's cemetery in Willey. Pallbearers were: Ora Roth, Eddie Dopheide, Ed Renze, Joe Hoffman, Albert Eischeid and Tony Riesenberg.

Mr. Kraus was injured when the car he was driving crashed into a concrete bridge four and one half miles south of Carroll on Highway 71 in a driving rainstorm.

LeRoy J. Kraus, 31, of Omaha, formerly of Carroll, died Tuesday, May 2, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha after a few weeks illness.

He was a supervisor at the Omaha branch of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Ann Catholic Church, 24th and Poppleton, in Omaha. Visitation at the John A. Gentleman Mortuary, 3411 Farnham in Omaha, will be after 9 a.m. Thursday. A rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m. Thursday. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Friday at Holy Spirit church in Carroll with the Rev. Roger Augustine, V.F., officiating. Visitation at the Twit Funeral Home in Carroll will be after 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Carroll. Brothers will act as pallbearers.

Surviving are his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Hannasch, Bellechester, Minn; brother Gerald Kraus, Des Moines; half-brothers Mike Hannasch, Sioux City; Tom Hannasch, Houston, Tex; Mark Hannasch, Cedar Falls; Richard Hannasch, Ames; Jim and Roch Hannasch, at home in Bellechester, Minn; half-sisters Mrs. Gary (Jane) Walter, Ames, and Mary Hannasch, Rochester, Minn; grandparents Mrs. Elizabeth Kraus and Anna Wittry, Carroll, and Leota Hannasch, Tracy, Minn.

Mr. Kraus was preceded in death by his grandparents Joseph Kraus and Jacob Wittry; father Clarence Kraus in 1952; half-brother Patrick Hannasch in 1978 and half-sister Theresa Marie in 1965.

He was born at Carroll March 30, 1950, a son of Clarence and Joan Wittry Kraus. He graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 1968 at Kuemper High School in Carroll and attended Iowa State University at Ames for three years. He was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity at Iowa State and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He had lived in Omaha for about six years.1

Mass of the Christian burial for Jerome J. Hannasch will be at 9:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellechester, Minn.

Mr. Hannasch, 71, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at his home in Bellechester.

A second burial Mass will take place at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. The Rev. James McCormick will preside at the services. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at Twit Funeral Home in Carroll. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

A son of John and Leota (Murphy) Hannasch, he was born June 25, 1926, in Carroll. Mr. Hannasch served with the Army during World War II. He worked for a record 49 years at 21st Century Genetics and was awarded the 100,000 Achievement Award by the National Association of Animal Breeders.

He and Joan M. Wittry were married July 25, 1954, at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. The two lived in Carroll until 1979, when they moved to Bellechester. Mr. Hannasch was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus for 50 years.

Mr. Hannasch is survived by his wife, Joan; two daughters, Jane Walter and her husband, Gary, and Mary Donnelly and her husband, Randy; six sons, Michael Hannasch and his wife, Valerie, Tom Hannasch and his wife, Sue, Mark Hannasch and his wife, Sharon, Dick Hannasch and his wife Kay Lampe, Roch Hannasch and his wife, Lori, and Jim Hannasch and his wife Linda; a stepson, Gerri Kraus and his wife, Terri Cole, six brothers, Claire Hannasch and his wife, Leota, Charles Hannasch and his wife, Dorothy, Paul Hannasch and his wife, Shirley, Arthur Hannasch and his wife, Rachel, George Hannasch and his wife, Jan, and John Hannasch; three sisters, Marcella Kanne and her husband, James; Mary Elaine Milbauer and her husband, Richard, and Caroline Hermsen; and two sisters-in-law, Leone Buelt and her husband, Leo, and Sister Pauline Wittry.

Mr. Hannasch was preceded in death by two children, Patrick and Teresa; a stepson, LeRoy Kraus; and his parents.2

Patrick Hannasch, 20, hit by a pickup truck, killed
Possible charges against Dwight Warren Pierce, 22, of Coon Rapids are being studied by the Carroll County sheriff's office following a pickup-pedestrian accident Saturday that claimed the life of Patrick H. Hannasch, 20, of 127 S. Court St., Carroll.

Sheriff John G. Longnecker said the accident investigation is continuing and it will probably be later in the week before a decision on filing charges is reached.

Hannasch was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Anthony Regional Hospital here after being injured about 2:30 a.m. by a pickup truck driven by Pierce, the sheriff said.

Hannasch was walking along Highway 30 about l/4 miles east of Carroll when the accident occurred. The death was Carroll County's first traffic fatality of 1978.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating. Pallbearers were Wayne Claggett, Mark Williams, Lee Buelt, Brian Kanne, Dean Kanne and Brandon Gute. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of the Twit Funeral Home.

Hannasch, son of Jerome and Jean Wittry Hannasch, was born Jan. 16, 1958, at Carroll. He was a 1976 graduate of Kuemper High School, attended Iowa Central Community College in Ft. Dodge and was a student at the Texas A and I University at Kingsviile, Texas. He was a former summer employee of the Highway Surfacers of New Hampton, Iowa.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Carroll, Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Kingsviile, Texas, a former 4-H area councilman and officer, a member of the championship judging team for livestock and a representative at the International Livestock Stock Exposition at Louisville, Ky. He was a lifetime Carroll resident.

Surviving are his parents and the following brothers and sisters, Mike of Ft. Dodge, Jane of Cedar Falls, Tom of Ames; Mark, Dick, Mary, Roch and Jim at home; two half-brothers, Gerald Kraus of Des Moines and LeRoy Kraus of Omaha, Neb. Also surviving are his grandmothers, Mrs. John Hannasch of Carroll and Mrs. Anna Wittry of Breda.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Teresa.1

Roch James Hannasch, 49, of Apple Valley, passed away Friday, February 1, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born December 15, 1963, in Carroll, Iowa to Jerome and Joan (nee Wittry) Hannasch.

Roch is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lori (nee Dahling) , children Brandon, Gabrielle, Kyle, and Michelle, mother Joan Hannasch, brothers Gerry (Terri) Kraus, Mike (Val), Tom (Sue), Mark (Sharon), Dick (Kay), and Jim (Linda) Hannasch, sisters Jane (Gary) Walter and Mary (Randy) Donnelly. He was preceded in death by his daughter Amanda, brothers LeRoy Kraus and Patrick Hannasch, sister Teresa Hannasch, and father, Jerome Hannasch.

Roch's volunteer service with the Boy Scouts, Loaves and Fishes, Habitat For Humanity and the Church of St. Joseph will be greatly missed, as will his game playing and humor. He will be forever loved and treasured.

Visitation is scheduled for 4-7 PM Monday, February 4 at the Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, 14850 Garrett Avenue, Apple Valley, (952) 432-2331, and Tuesday, February 5, 1 hour prior to 11 AM Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Joseph, 13900 Biscayne Avenue West, Rosemount. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Roch Benefit Fund.

OMAHA, Neb. - Mass of the Christian burial for Mary Jo Haller of Omaha, Neb., will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 22, 1996, at St. Gerald East Catholic Church in Omaha.

Mrs. Haller, 47, a native of Carroll, died of cancer Wednesday, July 17, 1996, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Omaha. Friends will call after noon and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Heaffy-Heaffy-Huffman Funeral Home in Omaha.

A daughter of Leo and Leone (Wittry) Buelt, she was born July 31, 1948, at Carroll and attended St. Bernard Schools in Breda, graduating in 1966. She attended St. Catherine School of Nursing in Omaha. She and Robert Haller were married Dec. 28, 1968, at Omaha. The couple settled there. Mrs. Haller had been in failing health for two years. She was a member of St. Gerald’s East Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert, of Omaha; two daughters: Jennifer Wilkins and her husband, Gary, of Omaha and Laura Haller of Omaha; a son, Jeffrey Haller of Omaha; a granddaughter, Cassandra Haller, of Omaha; her mother, Leone Buelt, of Breda; two sisters: Kay (Mrs. Don) Davis of Kent, Wash., and Rosie (Mrs. Andrew) Wiederin of Glendale, Calif; two brothers: Lee Buelt and his wife, Merrie Ann, of Exira and Bob Buelt and his wife, Joan, of Breda; two brothers-in-law: Phillip Haller and his wife, Carol, of Omaha and Jim Haller and his wife, Carol, of Ithaca, Neb; and a sister-in-law, Ann Haller, of Omaha.

Anthony Joseph "Tony" Starman
Anthony J. "Tony" Starman, 73, of Maquoketa died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Mass of the Christian burial for Mr. Starman, a Roselle native, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Revs. James McCormick, Sunny Dominic and Siby Punnose will concelebrate the Mass. Lector will be Betty Venteicher and gift bearers will be Brian Kelleher and Sarah Kelleher. Casket bearers will be Randy Starman, John Rees, Mike Rees, David Kasperbauer, Joyce Pudenz and Cathy Onken. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Haylock- O'Hara & Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa, where a vigil service will be held at 4 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus will recite a rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Twit Funeral Home in Carroll.

A son of Henry and Catherine (Steffes) Starman, he was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Roselle. He was a graduate of Guthrie Center School and attended LP gas programs with the University of Texas and Iowa State University in Ames.

He married Lorraine M. Nieland on May 3, 1950, in Carroll.

Mr. Starman worked with several gas companies through the years, retiring from Farrell Gas in Maquoketa. He managed Thermogas in Audubon for several years and he later worked part-time for Thermogas in Dubuque.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a charter member of the Fr. Loosbrock Council No. 8269 Knights of Columbus Maquoketa, where he served twice as the Grand Knight and had served as a District Deputy. He was also a faithful navigator and member of Dubourg Assembly No. 1573 Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in Dubuque. He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Starman of Maquoketa; a daughter, Deborah (Mrs. Tim) Kelleher of Fort Dodge; a son, Barry Starman of Long Grove, Iowa; two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one great grandchild; four step great grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Jerome) Kasperbauer of Manning, Sophia (Mrs. Milo) Rees of Guthrie Center and Theresa (Mrs. Paul) Mayer of Carroll; and a brother, Louis Starman and his wife, Eunice, of Carroll. Mr. Starman was preceded in death by his parents.1
