MT. CARMEL - Mass of the resurrection for Alois J. Vonnahme, 65, of Mt. Carmel, will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 1:30 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Paul E. Roder. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday at the Twit Funeral Home, Carroll. Rosary recitations are scheduled for 8 (parish) and 8:45 p.m. Thursday and 3 and 8:45 p.m. Friday There will be a scriptural prayer service at 8 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Vonnahme, a retired farmer, died of emphysema at 6 p.m. Jan. 13 at Loring Hospital, Sac City. He had been ill for several years.

A son of Joseph and Mary Becker Vonnahme, he was born at Mt. Carmel Aug. 2, 1910. He received his education here and was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. His marriage to Elinor Anna Nieland took place Feb. 12, 1935 at St. Bernard's Church, Breda. After living 2 1/2 miles southwest of Mt. Carmel for ten years and 2 1/2 miles south of Breda for 23 years they have lived in Mt. Carmel for the last eight years.

Surviving with his wife are four children, Mrs. Raymond (Coleen) Yuhasz of Canberra, Australia, Marvin of Campbellsburg, Ind., Lee of Westside and Mrs. Richard H. (Del Rae) Peterson of Scranton; eight grandchildren; a brother, Frank Vonnahme of Breda; and two sisters, Mrs. Henry Wuebker of Mt. Carmel and Mrs. Rose Eilers of Milford.

Mr. Vonnahme was preceded in death by a son, Robert; a sister and two brothers.3

Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. The Celebrant will be Fr. Lynn Bruch. Music will be by Carmen Ludwig and the St. Mary’s Choir. Mass servers will be Matthew Nieland and Tia Nieland. Lector for the funeral mass will be Randy Nieland. Gift Bearers will be: Susan Baumhover, Jodi Roland, Mikayla Nieland and Jenni Vilhauer. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Randy Nieland, Don Nieland and Carolyn Nieland. Born on February 16, 1919, at Auburn, Iowa, Germaine was the daughter of Herman and Ida (Schoo) Schelle. She attended country school in the Auburn and Mt. Carmel area and later graduated from Auburn Public School with the Class of 1937. On April 8, 1940, she married Arnold Nieland at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. The couple farmed east of Lidderdale and south of Breda before settling on the family farm southwest of Auburn. In 1989 they moved to their home in Auburn and in May of 2007 they both became residents of St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Germaine enjoyed playing cards, her sewing club, dancing, cooking, and baking. She loved hosting family gatherings and was devoted to her faith and her family. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Parish, and Parish Altar Society.

Survivors include her sons: Jerry Nieland and wife Carolyn of Auburn, Allen Nieland and wife Dianne of Carroll, Randy Nieland and wife Debbie of Auburn, and Don Nieland and wife Laurie of Auburn; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Marie Nieland of Storm Lake; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.

Germaine was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arnold in January of 2011; her grandson, Michael Venteicher; her brother Vincent Schelle; and one brother in infancy.3

Fern (Poeppe) Dobbins
A Mass of Christian Burial for Fern Dobbins of Emmetsburg was held Saturday, July 16, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.


Internment was in St. John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Fern Martha Poeppe, daughter of A. J. and Julia (Nieland) Poeppe was born July 30, 1934, in Carroll County, Iowa. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Emmetsburg. She continued her education at St. Anthony's School of Nursing in Carroll.

On Jan. 2, 1960, Fern was united in marriage to Kenneth Dobbins at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union, ten children were born.

Fern worked as an OB nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital in Carroll, Holy Family Hospital in Estherville and Dakota Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Fern loved working with her hands. She was a master seamstress, and she enjoyed: crocheting, knitting, embroidering and cross-stitching. Having ten children, she was an excellent cook, baker and cake decorator. Fern liked to pass time playing solitaire, working crossword puzzles and playing Sudoku. Fern was very proud of all of her children and grandchildren, and she loved spending time with all of them.

Fern was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg and a life-time member of Catholic Daughter's of the Americas, Moorhead, MN.

On Thursday, July 14, 2016, Fern passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. She was 81.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Ken of Emmetsburg; ten children: Mary DeJong (Doug) of Asheville, NC, John Dobbins (Judy) of Quincy, IL, Robert Dobbins (Debbie) of Moorhead, MN, Paul Dobbins (Suzanne) of Fargo, ND, Dr. Brian Dobbins (Anne) of Green Bay, WI, Scot Dobbins (Janelle) of Mahomet, IL, David Dobbins (Tammy) of New Brighton, MN, Mark Dobbins (April) of Winnebago, NE, Anita Murnane (John) of Papillion, NE and Kevan Dobbins (Jen) of Fargo, ND; 32 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one on the way.

Also osurviving are two brothers:Wayne Poeppe (Alvina) of Eagleville, MO and Kenneth Poeppe (Ruth) of Emmetsburg; four sisters: Dolora Brincks of Carroll, Phyllis Lindsey of Laurens, Pat Metzger (Howard) of Estherville, Zeline Gappa (Joe) of Emmetsburg. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews who affectionately remember her as Taunta Fern.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Sister Anita Poeppe FSPA; granddaughter, Paige Dobbins; and brother, Dale Poeppe.

Dale G. Poeppe
A Mass of Christian Burial for Dale Poeppe of Emmetsburg was Monday, Aug. 12, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The Rev Clem Currans was celebrant.
Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. Military rites were conducted by members of V.F.W. Post #2295. The Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Dale George Poeppe was born Sept. 7, 1943, in St. Anthony's Hospital at Carroll, the son of Albert John and Julia Florina (Nieland) Poeppe. He was a graduate of St. Ellen's Grade School and Emmetsburg Catholic High School. Following his education, he worked for Hawkeye Fertilizer, and in 1965, Dale was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1967. Dale again worked with Hawkeye Fertilizer, later Emmetsburg Grain Company, and shortly thereafter, he began farming. He raised grain and Duroc hogs. Dale farmed with his brother Ken until 1986, and he helped neighborhood farmers until his retirement.

On July 19, 1975, Dale was united in marriage to Belle Marlene Bradley in St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The couple made their home in Emmetsburg where they raised their four children.

Dale was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and all sports. He loved to spend time with his family, and he treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren.

On Aug. 9, 2012, Dale passed away at Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. He was 68.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bea of Emmetsburg; two daughters, Bernadette Michelle Merrill (Gary) of Algona and Cynthia Marie Poeppe of Emmetsburg; two sons, Albert John "A.J." Poeppe (Nicole) and Charles Roger "Chuck" Poeppe, of Emmetsburg; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne Poeppe (Alvina) of Eagleville, MO and Kenneth Poeppe (Ruth) of Emmetsburg; five sisters, Dolora Brincks of Carroll, Fern Dobbins (Ken) of Emmetsburg, Phyllis Lindsey of Laurens, Pat Metzger (Howard) of Estherville, and Zeline Gappa (Joe) of Emmetsburg.

Coleen (Vonnahme) Yuhasz
Mass of the Christian burial for Colleen (Vonnahme) Yuhasz of Arlington, Texas, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mount Carmel.

Mrs. Yuhasz, 63, died on Sunday, April 1, 2001, at her home in Arlington after a short illness.

Rev. Robert Brown will officiate and burial will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Mount Carmel.

A daughter of Alois and Elinor (Nieland) Vonnahme, she was born May 27, 1937, in Carroll. She graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in Breda. She and Raymond Yuhasz were married Oct. 29, 1960, at Perth Amboy, N.J.

Survivors include her husband Raymond of Arlington, Texas; a son Keith Yuhasz and his wife, Kimberly; two grandchildren; her mother, Elinor Nees of Carroll; two brothers and their wives, Marvin and Judy Vonnahme of Campbellsburg, Ind., and Lee and LaVonne Vonnahme of Westside; a sister and her husband, Del Rae and Richard Peterson of Scranton; and a sister-in-law, Janet Yuhasz.

Mrs. Yuhasz was preceded in death by her father Alois; a brother, Robert Vonnahme; her stepfather, George Nees; and her parents-in-law, Alexander and Eleanor Yuhasz.2

Mr. Marvin J. Vonnahme age 76 of Salem passed away Sunday, October 18 at Floyd Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Vonnahme was born October 25, 1938, in Breda, Iowa the son of Alios and Elinor Nieland Vonnahme. He was a retired employee of Bender Lumber. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Salem Branch.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife: Judith Dodds Vonnahme on September 8, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife: Cheri Curtis Vonnahme of Salem, his son: Larin Vonnahme (Gwinn) of Crestwood, Kentucky, his daughter: Lori Elder (Doug) of Louisville, Kentucky, his brother: Lee Vonnahme (Lavonne) of Iowa and 5 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:00AM at Weathers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8PM and Wednesday from 10AM-time of service.

Del Rae E. Peterson
Mass of the Christian burial for Del Rae E. Peterson of Scranton was at 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2004, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Scranton.

Mrs. Peterson, 61, died Thursday, May 13 at the Greene county Medical Center in Jefferson.

The Rev. Stephen McCloud presided at the Mass. Lector was Eldon Wright. Gift bearers were grandchildren Aaron Liechti and Travis Koster. Casket bearers were Dean Gibson, Donald “Chop” Gibson, Travis Tuel, Charlie Duff, Larry Fraizer and Bob Walker. Honorary casket bearers were grandchildren Stephanie Peterson, Kyle Peterson, Garrett Peterson, Amber Liechti, Aaron Liechti and Travis Koster. Burial was in Scranton Township Cemetery. Visitation started at 3 p.m. and a prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton.

A daughter of Alois and Elinor (Nieland) Vonnahme, she was born June 4, 1942, at Carroll, raised on her family’s farm south of Breda and graduated from St. Bernard Catholic School in Breda.

She and Richard H. Peterson were married February 4, 1961, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda.

They lived and worked on the Peterson home farm south of Scranton for 30 years. They moved to Scranton in 1990.

Over the years, Mrs. Peterson had several jobs in Scranton, including Casey’s and the Scranton Public Library. She was also an Avon saleswoman for 20 years.

Survivors include a son, Craig Peterson, and his wife Lois of Scranton; a daughter, Michelle Peterson of Hopkins, MO; six grandchildren; two brothers: Marvin Vonnahme and his wife Judy of Campbellsburg, IN, and Lee Vonnahme and his wife LaVonne, of Westside; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Yuhasz of Arlington, Texas.

Mrs. Peterson was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; a sister, Colleen; and a brother, Robert.1
