Birth*20 September 1831Henrich Gerhard Overmöhle was born on 20 September 1831, at Besten, Kreis Bersenbrück, Hanover.
He was the son of Johann Friedrich Overmöhle and Anna Margaretha Elisabeth Kock
Marriage*23 January 1858Henrich Gerhard Overmöhle married Maria Adelaid Loxterkamp, daughter of Johann Gerhard Loxterkamp and Catherina Elisabeth Biemann, on 23 January 1858, at Ankum, Bersenbrück, Hanover.
Misc*1859Henrich Gerhard Overmöhle was According to the church records at Ankum, Germany, Heinrich (or Herman) Gerhard Overmohle (known as Gerhard) was born in bauernschaft Besten, near Ankum, on September 22. According to the baptismal record, his first name was Heinrich, but according to the marriage record it was Herman. His parents were Johann Friederich Overmohle and Elizabeth Koch. He had at least three siblings, all girls: M. Adelheid (born November 12, 1829), Catharina Maria (born November 10, 1833), and Anna Maria (born February 8, 1836, at bauernschaft Besten).

Gerhard married Maria Loxterkamp at St. Nicholas Church, Ankum, on January 23, 1858. At the time of his marriage he was living in baurnschaft Holsten. This move suggests that he may not have inherited the Overmohle estate, if there was one. The fact that it is possible to trace the family back so far in Ankum parish suggests that Gerhard's progenitors owned an estate; people who did not "own land" tended to move around more. (Peasants who "owned" land were actually tied to the soil.) There were a number of Overmohle families in Ankum parish, but Tuiting, in 1000 Jahre Ankum, refers most often to a family who lived right on the edge of town. These people seemed to have owned a lot of land. Possibly our proginators lived on and farmed some outlying piece of this large Overmohle farm.

Gerhard immigrated to the U.S. with his wife and four chidren in 1884. (There is some uncertainty whether they all came over at once.) He became a naturalized U.S. citizen, but according to the 1900 census, he did not speak English. He was able to read and write - probably German. Very likely he spoke both high and low German.

I do not know if the family came to Carroll County, Iowa, immediately upon arriving in the US, but probably they did. (I have been told that a number of New Vienna, Iowa, families moved to Carroll County because there was a land agent from Carroll County working the New Vienna area. I suspect there may also have been a land agent from Carroll County working in the Ankum, Germany, area, as there are a number of Ankum families who settled in Carroll County. Included among them are: Overmohle, Loxterkamp, Havermann, Buelt, and Starmann. If such was the case, it is probable that they came directly to Carroll County.) On July 7, 1885, Gerhard Overmohle purchased a plot of land on the edge of Roselle, Iowa, from Conrad Hoffer, for $2450. This land had earlier belonged to a man named Hill, which accounts for the fact that one side of Roselle was once named Hillsdale. A grandson of Gerhard and Maria, Joe Overmohle, now owns the land.

Joe Overmohle told me the following story. Before the Overmohle family lived on the farm, two men were cutting across the field not far from where the house presently stands. It was very bad winter storm. Their buggy or sleigh tipped over, and the horses ran off. The men froze to death, and were later buried on that spot.

In 1892, Gerhard sold the farm to his son, Gerhard, for $2000, but he continued to live there with the young family.

Gerhard died on November 5, 1902. He is buried in Roselle.
