John “JJ” Janning, 82 of Carroll, died Sunday, July 26, 2015, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll surrounded by his family.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Con-Celebrant will be Fr. Robert Gralapp. Music will be by Barb McDermott, Holy Spirit Choir, with John Wagner as soloist. Lectors for the funeral mass will be John’s grandchildren: Stephanie Hackfort and Payton Janning. Gift Bearers will be John’s grandchildren: Bennett Janning, Kylie Janning, Carter Soppe, and Kenna Soppe. Eucharistic Ministers will be Mary Lou Janning and Tamie Badding. Honorary Casket Bearers will be John’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casket Bearers will be John’s grandsons’: Chris Janning, Nick Janning, Jack Janning, Joe Janning, Mitch Janning, and Tanner Janning. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. The Carroll 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will form an honor guard for the funeral mass.

Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, where there will be a Carroll Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Rosary at 5 p.m., and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, where visitation will resume until the time of the funeral mass. Born on December 23, 1932, at Carroll, Iowa, John J. Janning was the son of John B. and Theodora (Schoeppner) Janning. He attended school in Mt. Carmel and graduated from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School in 1950.

On June 3, 1953, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Berning at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The couple spent their entire lifetime in the Carroll area where John owned and operated Janning Ceilings, LTD, which is currently owned by his sons. In retirement, John and Mary Ann owned Westside Antiques in Westside, Ia. for several years. JJ was a craftsman with woodworking and refinishing furniture and he took great pride in his work. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter; taking trips to fish for salmon and trout; and he loved fishing the river for catfish. One of his greatest enjoyments each spring was the annual "Janning Turkey Camp".

JJ also enjoyed gardening and was especially proud of his rock and flower garden. JJ's greatest pride and joy in his life was his family; especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. JJ was a member of Holy Spirit Church, and the Carroll 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, where he served as Faithful Navigator.

John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann Janning of Carroll; his children: Terry (Karen) Janning of Carroll, Bill (Marla) Janning of Carroll, Rick (Karla) Janning of Scranton, Randy (Barb) Janning of Carroll, Ted Janning of Tucson, AZ, Pat (Mike) Soppe of Carroll, Larry Janning of Tucson, AZ, Kelly (Cindy) Janning of Carroll, and John (April) Janning of Des Moines; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lois (Dan) Mein of Leavenworth, KS; his brothers: Bernie Janning of Carroll, and Lowell “Butch” (Julia) Janning of Glidden; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mary Lou Janning of Carroll, Diane Janning of Glidden, Art Becker of Charter Oak, Bill (Betty) Berning of Ft. Dodge, Agnes Tigges of Des Moines, Marion Berning of Breda, Dorthea Berning of Cedar Falls, and Viola Berning of Carroll; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Bill and Anna Berning; his sisters: Louise (Darol) Grossman, and Dorothy Becker; his brothers: Lawrence (Jean) Janning, Jerome Janning, Kenneth (June) Janning, and Ernie Janning; a grandson, Zachary James Janning and his sister-in-law, Arlene Janning.
