Joseph J. Berning
Joseph Jake Berning, Sr. was born in Lismore, MN, March 20, 1917, to George and Amelia (Koessler) Berning. He died April 27, 2008, at the Graceville Holy Trinity Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones. He attended Catholic school in Lismore and moved to Beardsley with his family in 1928. He finished his education at the Hi-Lo Country School of Beardsley.

On October 4, 1944, he was joined in marriage to Genevieve Hendricks, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Graceville. They moved to a rural farm northwest of Beardsley where they made their living off the land and from this marriage were blessed with 5 children. After 23 years on the farm they moved to the town of Beardsley in 1967. They resided there until 1987. They then made their home in Clinton and Graceville, respectively, to the present time.

Joe enjoyed many years providing for his family raising various livestock and crops on the farm and later by raising just hogs. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his many relatives.

Due to illness Joe was no longer able to work as hard, but he loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He never turned down the chance to play cribbage, Yahtzee and of course enjoyed his trips to the casino. He treasured and appreciated his friends and caretakers at Grace Home the past 2 years, where we was able to renew old friendships and make new ones. Joe loved to share his many stories and memories of the Good Ol' Days.

He is survived by: his wife Gen of 63 years, daughter Bonnie (David) Baysinger of Fairmont, MN; sons, Joe (Deb) Berning of Ortonville, Tom (Mona) Berning of Willmar, MN, and Ed (Vicki) Berning of Beardsley. One sister Verna Holden, of Sartell, MN, sister-in-law, Betty Berning of Wadena, MN; Grand Children: Angela (Rusty) McCormick, Luke (Jenny) Baysinger, Jason (Shelly) Berning, Jennifer (Troy) Cronen, Casey (Erik) Dunker, T.J. (Lisa) Berning, Heather (Brent) Groos, and Hilary Berning; great-grandchildren: Gavin & Griffin Groos, Reese & Tyce Cronen, Drake Berning, Madison & Ian Baysinger, Caleb & Gabriella Dunker, and MANY nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: one daughter, Shereyl Berning; granddaughter, Melissa Lee Berning, and great -granddaughter, Angel Lee Cronen; parents, George and Amelia Berning, one sister, Leona Buls, 3 brothers; Lawrence, Lee, and Jerome, two brother-in-laws; Ray Buls, and George Holden and a sister-in-law, Helen Berning.

Verna was born on February 5, 1914, in Lismore, Minnesota to George and Amelia (Koessler) Berning. She married George Holden on October 8, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Beardsley. They lived in Beardsley prior to moving to Sartell in 1986. Verna belonged to the Christian Mothers and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish.Verna had a dedication to prayer life, especially the rosary. Her family was always of great importance throughout her life. She also enjoyed playing bingo, trips to the casino, and going out to dinner.

She is survived by her children, Don (Louise) of Savage, Jan (Jim) Nathe of Foley; grandchildren, Cindi, David, Tony, Amy, and Nicole; 11 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Judy Holden of Fulda.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Gary; grandson, Greggie; and brothers and sister, Lee, Leona Buls, Jerry, and Joe.1

Gerald E. King
A graveside funeral service for Gerald Elvis King, 72, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma was held at the Chandler Cemetery August 9.
Mr. King passed away Sunday morning, August 2 at the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City, following a bout with cancer.
Gerald was born on Oct. 22, 1936, at Chandler, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, to Herman Elvis and Fannie Lois (Taylor) King. After graduation from Farmington High School, Farmington, N.M. in 1955, he attended the University of Oklahoma for two years. He returned to Farmington and was employed by El Paso Natural Gas Company until he enlisted into The United States Army in 1959. He was transferred to a NIKE HERCULES MISSILE RANGE in Gary, Indiana.
July 6, 1960, he married Frances Stallman, formerly of Reliance, South Dakota and Farmington at his parent’s home in Seminole, Oklahoma. Gerald and Fran were the parents of one child, Vicki Lyn King.
Gerald was honorably discharged from the Army in 1962, re-locating to Oklahoma City. He and Fran divorced in 1977. They remained friends throughout Gerald's life. She became his caregiver during the last three years of his life. Gerald worked on cross country pipeline construction from 1965 through 1972 then returned to OKC to open and operate a Skelly Service Station on East Reno until 1978. At this time he became a Real Estate Broker and owned and operated KING/MIZE Realtors until his retirement in 1997. After retirement, Gerald dabbled in antique sales, and classic automobiles. Both were a passion of his most of his adult life.
Grateful for sharing his life are his daughter, Vicki and husband John Martin; three granddaughters, Brittany and husband Jeff Wells and Sara, Lauren, Rileigh Shea; ex-wife Fran King, all of Newcastle, OK., and one sister, Janice Carol King-Holland of Chandler, OK.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Elvis King, his mother, Fannie Lois King and one sister, Mary Louise Kiker.
