Eugene G. Huegerich
Eugene G. Huegerich, age 80, of Fonda, died Monday, February 12, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, February 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place Friday, February 16, from 5-7 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Eugene George Huegerich was born May 31, 1937, in Carroll, the son of Edward and Clara (Freking) Huegerich.

As an infant, he was baptized in Auburn. His family moved to the Varina area when he was a young boy. Eugene attended school in Varina, graduating from St. Columbkille Catholic High School in 1955.

After graduation, Eugene spent a few years working road construction and at the feed mill in Varina. Eugene was drafted into the United States Army in July of 1960. He spent nineteen months serving his country in Germany before his honorable discharge in July of 1962. Eugene began farming after his return home from the service.

On April 5, 1975, Eugene was united in marriage to Rita (Nieland) Lillig at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Together, they were blessed with two daughters, Sara and Janet.

Eugene was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, and often attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Fonda. He also was a member of the Varina American Legion.

He enjoyed farming, gardening, morning coffee at Ag Partners, and in his younger years, attending machinery auctions throughout the area. Most of all, Eugene loved spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Rita Huegerich of Fonda; children: Sara (Phil) and their children: Mikala, Maci, and Dilan; Janet Huegerich of Carroll; sisters: Sister Marilyn Huegerich of Clinton, Iowa; Lois Newman of Altoona; Waunita (Bill) Schultz of North Oaks, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Joy Huegerich of Sioux Rapids; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Clara Huegerich; parents-in-law, Walter and Teresa Nieland; brothers: Irwin (Mary) Huegerich, Ronald Huegerich, and Allan Huegerich; and niece, Melissa Schultz.1
