Mr. Steinkamp, 67, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

The Rev. William Schreiher will preside at the Mass. Lector will he Diana Hoogestraat. Gift hearers will be Rollie and Kerry Schoessler. Servers will be Alex and Amber Vonnahme. Eucharistic ministers will be Virginia Wernimont, Dan Wernimont and Kris Wernimont. Casket hearers will he Terry Eich, Randy Eich, Al Wernimont, Craig Wernimont, Mark Evers, Doug Evers, Russ Steinkamp, Brad Stoffers, Brian Stoffers and Dan Wernimont. Honorary casket bearers will be Jeff Booth, Dan Schmitz, Steve Vonnahme, Mike Vonnahme, John Vonnahme, Joe Vonnahme, Bruce Vonnahme and Allen Vonnahme. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Arcadia American Legion post.

Visitation and a rosary by Kuemper Catholic Schools were held this afternoon at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. There will be a Christian wake service by St. John Parish at 7:30 and another rosary will be prayed at the funeral home.

A son of Frank and Emma (Damm) Steinkamp, he was born Jan. 31, 1932, at Arcadia and spent his life there. He attended St. John School in Arcadia and Westside High School. After World War II he joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific.

He and Gladys Vonnahme were married Jan. 24, 1959, at St. John Church in Arcadia. The Steinkamps farmed west of Arcadia until 1981, when they moved into town.

Mr. Steinkamp was a member of St. John Parish in Arcadia, member and honor guard participant at the American Legion post in Arcadia and a former director of Arcadia Telephone Corp. He enjoyed the outdoors and playing cards and bingo.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys, of Arcadia; a brother, Melvin Steinkamp, and his wife, Bernice, of Arcadia; four sisters and their husbands: Leota and Harold Eich of Ogden, Cleone and Rollie Evers of Cedar Falls, Virginia Wernimont of Atlantic and Neva and Bill Whitaker of Orange, Calif; and five siblings-in-law and their spouses: Leon Vonnahme of Arcadia, Alice Schmitz of Arcadia, LeRoy and Norma Vonnahme of Arcadia, Vera and Roland Booth of Guthrie Center and Lyle and Lorraine Vonnahme of Carroll. .

Mr. Steinkamp was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and their wives: Merlin and Lenore Steinkamp and Raymond and Virginia Steinkamp; and two brothers-in-law, Wilfred Wernimont and Leo Schmitz.2

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 27, 2019, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Friedrichsen. Music will be by Sharon Bierl and the St. John’s Choir. Mass Servers will be Caden Vonnahme, Brenden Vonnahme, and Sam Julin. Lector will be Beth Grace. Gladys, the daughter of John and Leona (Otto) Vonnahme was born on July 17, 1930, near Mt. Carmel, Iowa. She grew up in Arcadia, attending St. John’s School, St. Angela’s Academy, and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1948. After her formal education, Gladys worked at the Arcadia Legion Hall, as well as assisted her parents on the farm.

Gladys met Lorne Steinkamp at a dance at the Arcadia Legion Hall, and the couple married on January 24, 1959, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. The couple made their home near Arcadia where Gladys helped on the farm, assisted at Vonnahme Bar & Grill and devoted her time to being a caretaker for her mother.

After they retired from farming, Lorne and Gladys built a house in Arcadia and enjoyed many years there together. Gladys continued working for Stork Catering and working many weddings and dances at the Arcadia Legion Hall.

In her free time, Gladys enjoyed playing cards, bowling, bingo, gardening, canning, mowing lawn, and her Friday shopping trips. She was an avid Chicago Cubs, and Iowa State Basketball fan, and enjoyed cheering them on whenever she could. She will be remembered for her famous Carmel Corn around Christmastime. Gladys was a member of St. John’s Parish, and Guild, as well as the Arcadia American Legion Auxiliary.

Gladys is survived by her brother, Lyle Vonnahme of Carroll; sisters-in-law: Norma Vonnahme of Arcadia, and Neva Whitaker of Orange, CA as well as many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.

Caroline Reis, 91, of Carroll died on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The celebrant will be the Rev. Frank Nemmers. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda. Lectors will be grandchildren, Tricia Langel, Barb Imming and Patrick Reis. Gift bearers will be grandsons, Kevin Reis and Jeff Riesberg. Mass servers will be grandsons, Mark Reis, Kris Reis and Jay Riesberg. Casket bearers will be grandsons, Terry Reis, Steve Killeen, Kenneth Loneman, Allan Olerich, Mike Reis and Scott Williams. Mrs. Reis was born on Aug. 24, 1896, at Breda, the daughter of Bernard and Elizabeth Boes Steinkamp. She spent her entire lifetime in the Breda and Carroll communities and attended country schools near Breda.

On Nov. 22, 1920, she was married to Joseph J. Reis at St. Bernard Church in Breda, by the Rev. Schulte. Following their marriage, they farmed near Breda and in 1940 moved to Breda. In 1945, the couple moved to Carroll. She had been a resident of the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home since August 1975.

Mrs. Reis is survived by six daughters: Mrs. Lorraine Killeen of Churdan, Darnella (Mrs. Lawrence) Loneman of Maple River, Janice Huisenga of Carroll, Betty (Mrs. Louis) Williams of Carroll, Ilia Mae (Mrs. Harold) Riesberg of Halbur and Karen Reis of Boone; three sons: LaVerdos Reis and his wife, Luella, of Auburn. Delmar Reis and his wife, Arlene, of Odebolt and Joseph Reis and his wife, Helen, of Coon Rapids; 46 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ted Steinkamp and Lawrence Steinkamp, both of Wall Lake; and two sisters, Connie Terlisner of Tucson, Ariz., and Julie Thobe of New Ulm, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, in 1963, two sons, Unis and Myron Reis; one grandson. Jack Riesberg; two great-grandsons. Rick and John Reis; one brother, Frank Steinkamp, and one sister, Ida Ludwig.2

Joseph John Reis Sr.
Joseph J. Reis Sr., 69, died about 4:05 a.m. Monday, July 29, at St. Anthony Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital at 5:30 p.m. Sunday after suffering a heart attack at his home at 1010 North Court Street, Carroll.

Requiem mass will be read at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence Church, of which he was a member. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henry B. Karhoff will officiate; and interment will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Breda.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. Monday at the Sharp Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 8 and 8:30 p.m. Monday, and at 3, 8 and 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Mr. Reis was born Aug. 13, 1893, at Ramsey, Ill., a son of John and Mary Reis. As a young man he settled in the Breda vicinity; and in World War I, served overseas with the 16th Infantry. He was married to Caroline Steinkamp on Nov. 22, 1920, at St. Bernard's Church, Breda, with the Rev. Fr. Schulte officiating.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Reis farmed east of Breda, then south of Breda until moving into Breda, where they made their home until 1944. Since that year they had lived in Carroll.

He is survived by his wife; nine children: Mrs. Charles (Lorraine). Killeen, Churdan; LaVerdos Reis, Wall Lake; Mrs. Lawrence (Darnella) Loneman, Maple River; Mrs. Milo (Janice) Olerich, Scranton; Delmar Reis, Odebolt; Mrs. Louis (Betty) Williams, Carroll; Mrs. Harold (Ila Mae) Riesberg, Halbur; Joseph Reis Jr., Wall Lake; and Karen Ann Reis, at home; also 34 grandchildren. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Fred Reis, Walcott, Ind; Frank Reis and Ed Reis, Lafayette, Ind; Mrs. R. H. Reever, Pana, Ill; Mrs. Art Deakins, Decatur, Ill; Mrs. E. D. Donvan, Assumption, Ill; and Mrs. Mary Hemelick, Tucson, Ariz.

Mr. Reis was preceded in death by two sons, Myron and Eunice; his parents and two sisters.2

Mass of the Christian burial for Lorraine Elizabeth Killeen was this morning,- Nov. 20, 2000, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan.

Mrs. Killeen. 79, of Churdan, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Burial was at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery west of Churdan. Father Steven McLoud presided at the services. Brown Funeral Home in Churdan handled arrangements.

She was born Nov. 11, 1921, at Breda to Joseph and Caroline (Steinkamp) Reis. She was raised in Breda and attended school there.

Following her school, she worked as a waitress at a cafe in Carroll where she met Charles Leslie Killeen. They married on Feb. 22, 1944, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda.

The couple farmed west of Churdan. Mr. Killeen died in January 1970. Mrs. Killeen then moved to Churdan. From 1970 to 1983 she was a cook at Paton-Churdan High School. She also worked for many years at the Redwood in Jefferson. She continued to live in Churdan after her retirement in 1993.

She was a member of St. Columbkille Church in Churdan, the Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Mrs. Killeen, is survived by her children, Joleen Lusk and her husband, Eddie, of Minneapolis, Minn., Joyce Snyder of Grimes and Steve Killeen and his wife, Brenda, of Churdan; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, LaVerdos Reis of Auburn and Delmar Reis of Odebolt; and three sisters, Janice Huisenga of Carroll, Ilia Mae Riesberg of Halbur and Karen Reis of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and two sisters.1

Charles Killeen
Funeral services for Charles Killeen were held Monday morning at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church in Churdan. Father Leo L. Riesberg was celebrant, and Father John Turza of LeMars, formerly of Churdan gave the sermon. The casket bearers were Richard Killeen, James Mielk, Paul Happe, Patrick Killeen, Jerry Carey, and John Brend. Burial was in the Cedar cemetery west of Churdan.

Charles Leslie Killeen, son of Frank and Josephine Block Killeen, was born near Arcadia, Iowa, on May 4, 1915, and passed away Thursday evening, January 1, 1970, at his home west of Churdan. He attended the parochial school in Arcadia and graduated from the High School at Westside. He had been in failing health the past three years.

On February 22, 1944, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Reis, the wedding taking place at the St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda. Born to his union were two daughters and one son, Joleen of Northfield, Minn., Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Snyder of Atlantic, and Stephen at home.

The first five years of their married life was spent near Arcadia, where they were engaged in farming. Then they moved to the Churdan community, where they farmed the Merrill Rogers farm west of Churdan for six years, and the past several years they had lived on the Louis Carey farm, where they were living at the time of his death.

Surviving are his wife Lorraine, three children, a granddaughter, Christine Ann Snyder, his mother, Mrs. Josephine Killeen, now residing at the St. Anthony Care Center at Carroll, four brothers, Arnold of Arcadia, Lorne of Westside, Melvin of Templeton, and Eldore of Sac City, and one sister, Mrs. Laverna Buffton of Oakland, Calif. He was preceded in death by his father.2

Mr. Reis was born on September 6, 1923, at Breda, Iowa, a son of Joseph J. and Caroline (Steinkamp) Reis. He spent most of his lifetime in the Breda and Auburn communities and attended St. Bernard School.

On March 5, 1946, he was married to Luella Bluml at Holy Family Church in Lidderdale, Iowa, with Father Laurence Schoeppner officiating. The couple farmed in Sac and Carroll counties and in 1986 moved to their home in Auburn. Mr. Reis was employed by the Sac County Conservation Board as the Grant Park Attendant for 15 years. He was a member of St. Mary Parish at Auburn.

He is survived by his wife, Luella Reis of Auburn, children Pam Deal and her husband James of Anoka, Minn., Terry Reis and his wife Joy of Lake View, Tricia Langel and her husband Gene of Templeton, Dan Reis and his wife Vickie of Westside, and Deb Ludwig and her husband Meryl of Auburn; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; brother Delmar Reis of Odebolt; sisters, Janice Huisenga of Carroll, Illa Mae Riesberg of Halbur, and Karen Reis of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Helen Reis of Coon Rapids; and brother-in-law, Louis Williams of Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandsons Rick Reis and John Reis; brothers Unis Reis, Myron Reis, and Joseph Reis, Jr; and sisters, Lorraine Killeen, Darnella Loneman, and Betty Williams.2

Born on September 15, 1927, at Roselle, Iowa, Luella Margaret was the daughter of Bernard and Mary (Meier) Bluml. She spent her younger years in the Roselle area and attended Holy Angels School.

On March 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to LaVerdos Reis at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lidderdale. The couple farmed in the Breda and Auburn area until 1986 when they moved to their home in Auburn. Throughout her working career Luella was employed at Waters Clothing Store in Carroll, Snappy Popcorn in Breda, and also cooked at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City.
Luella was a talented homemaker and enjoyed sewing, cooking, hosting family gatherings, and always opened her home to welcome family and her many friends. In their younger years Luella and LaVerdos enjoyed dancing, bowling, and fishing. Luella also enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, and socializing with her family and friends. She had a deep devotion to her faith being active in St. Mary’s Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and Parish Funeral Committee.

Survivors include her children: Pam Deal and husband Jim of Anoka, MN, Terry Reis and wife Joy of Lake View, Tricia Langel and husband Gene of Templeton, Dan Reis and wife Vickie of Westside, and Deb Ludwig and husband Meryl of Auburn; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; her sisters: Elaine Schwaller of Templeton, and Mary Jane Bluml of Minneapolis, MN; her brothers: Harold ( Phyllis) Bluml of Wichita, KS, and Felix (Kay) Bluml of Jefferson City, MO; her in-laws: Alma Bluml of Wall Lake, Janice Huisenga of Carroll, Illa Mae Riesberg of Halbur, Helen Reis of Coon Rapids, and Louis Williams of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband LaVerdos in 2005; her grandsons: Rick Reis and John Reis; her son-in-law, Tom Kuker; her sister, Karen Bluml; and her brothers: Leonard Bluml and Norman “Jack” Bluml.

Thomas L. Kuker
The mass of the resurrection for Thomas L. Kuker, 32, of Carroll was celebrated by the Rev. Richard Birdsall at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Francis Church, Maple River. The Rev. Fr. Nabbity of Omaha was also in the sanctuary.

Pall bearers were Mr. Kukers' brothers, Evan, Marvin, Morris, Allan, Richard and Robert Kuker. Interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Carroll, under direction of the Sharp Funeral Home of Carroll.

Mr. Kuker died April 16 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital after four years' illness. On July 12, 1972, he became the first diabetic to receive a cadaver transplant at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.

Among those attending the funeral was his kidney brother, Clarence Kayser of Waterloo.

Other relatives and friends were from Omaha, Fort Calhoun and Osmund, Neb; St. Cloud and Burnside, Minn; Great Falls, Mont.: Hammond. La; Arcadia, Breda, Schleswig, Storm Lake, Pocahontas, Fort Dodge Mapleton, Wall Lake, Templeton, Halbur, Churdan, Auburn, Lake View, Havelock, Laurens, Audubon, Cedar Rapids and Carroll.

Persons wishing to contribute to kidney research in memory of Mr. Kuker may send donations to the Kidney foundation, Des Moines.1

Born on July 31, 1951, at Carroll, Iowa, Daniel Joseph was the son of LaVerdos and Luella (Bluml) Reis. He grew up west of Breda until 1956, when the family moved to Gray until 1958. From 1959 to 1961 they lived near Early, Iowa. In 1962 he and his family moved back to Breda, where Dan graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in 1969.

On July 8, 1972, Dan was united in marriage to Vickie Stork at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda by Fr. John Doherty. After their marriage the couple lived east of Breda, and Dan worked for J.J. Feldman from 1967 to 1973. At that time they moved to their present location west of Breda, and Dan worked for A.J. Schwarzkopf for several years. Dan later started Reis Bin, LLC.

Dan loved farming, working hard, playing cards, playing slow pitch with the Zeke’s Oldtimers, starting and operating Reis Bin, LLC, and helping many people in need. Dan was a member of St. Bernard Parish, where he was a former parish director.

Dan is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vickie Reis of Breda, his son Scott Reis of Des Moines, and his daughter Leslie Reis of Denison. Also surviving are his siblings: Pam (Jim) Deal of Andover, MN, Terry (Joy) Reis of Lake View, Tricia (Gene) Langel of Templeton, and Deb (Meryl) Ludwig of Auburn; his brother-in-law’s, and sister-in-law’s: Jim (Jane) Stork of Carroll, Carol (John) Boes of Carroll, Vonnie Stork of Sioux Falls, SD, Russ (Jan) Stork of Omaha, and Lori (Mike) Kleespies of Lawler; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Born on August 23, 1951, in Carroll, Iowa, Vickie was the daughter of Irwin and Marie Dorothy (Snyder) Stork. She grew up on the family farm one mile east and a half a mile north of Breda, and she later graduated from St. Bernard’s High School.

On July 8, 1972, Vickie was united in marriage to Dan Reis at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The couple lived southeast of Breda briefly before moving to their current residence west of Breda. Over the years Vickie worked at Carroll Medical Associates, and later McFarland Clinic before retiring in January of 2016.

Vickie enjoyed music, quilting, the color purple, golfing, family history, and birds, especially cardinals. She was a member of St. Bernard’s ladies guild, St. Bernard’s Choir, Carroll Contemporary Choir, Carroll County Genealogy, the Carroll Master Gardeners, and St. Bernard’s Parish in Breda.

Vickie is survived by her children: Scott Reis of Des Moines, and Leslie Reis of Denison. Also surviving are her siblings: Jim (Jane) Stork of Carroll, Carol (John) Boes, of Carroll, Vonnie Stork of Sioux Falls, SD, Russ (Jan) Stork of Omaha, and Lori (Mike) Kleespies of Lawler; her brother-in-law’s and sister-in-law’s: Pam (Jim) Deal of Andover, MN, Terry (Joy) Reis of Lake View, Tricia (Gene) Langel of Templeton, and Deb (Meryl) Ludwig of Auburn, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Myron Reis, 22, Carroll; who was injured critically in a truck accident near Woodbine last Wednesday night, died at Mercy hospital, Council Bluffs, about 8:45 a. m. today.

The Olerich funeral coach of Carroll brought the body here today. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Mr. Reis was injured when the truck he was driving crashed into the rear end of a semi-trailer two miles east of Woodbine. He was en route to Carroll with a load of merchandise.

The accident occurred when the semi-trailer stopped suddenly to allow an oncoming bus the right-of-way across a narrow bridge.

The Carroll man is the second county resident injured fatally in a highway accident this year. Mrs. Ivan Forke, 24, of Breda was killed in a collision last month about five miles east of Breda.

Mr. Reis was employed by Louis Pietig, operator of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling company plant here. He is survived by his widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Reis, six sisters and three brothers. Another brother preceded him in death. He was a World War II army veteran and a member of SS. Peter and Paul church.

Funeral Services For Myron Reis to Be Held Thursday

Funeral services are set for 8:30 a. m. Thursday at SS. Peter and Paul's church for Myron T. Reis, 22, whose injuries in a truck accident hear Woodbine last Wednesday evening resulted in his death at Mercy hospital, Council Bluffs, at 8:20 yesterday morning. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

The body is resting at the Olerich Funeral home, where the rosary will be prayed at 8 o'clock tonight and also Wednesday evening. Mr. Reis was born April 21, 1925, at Breda, a son of Joe and Caroline Reis. He was educated in St. Bernard's school there.

His marriage to Betty Jean Pietig of Carroll took place August 28, 1945, at SS. Peter and Paul's church. Mr. Reis was in the armed forces at that time, having entered the service March 27, 1945. His foreign duty took him to the Philippine Islands, where he was stationed for 14 months. He came home November 13,1946.

Besides his wife and parents, of Carroll, he leaves six sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Charles Killeen (Lorrine), Westside; LaVerdos, Breda; Mrs. Lawrence Loneman (Darnella), Carroll, and Janice, Delmar, Betty, Illa Mae, Joseph and Karen Ann, at home. One brother died in infancy.

Mr. Reis belonged to SS. Peter and Paul's church. He was a member of the Amvets service organization. He was employed by Louis Pietig, operator of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling company plant here.
