Carol Nieland
Final rites were held Dec. 29 for Sgt. Carol Nieland 23, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman A. Nieland of rural Breda.

The Rev. John Doherty celebrated the requiem high mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Bernard Church. Also in the sanctuary were the Revs. Harold Cooper, Vail, Marvin Boes, Sioux City, and Gerald L. Zeman, Breda.

Sgt. Nieland was buried in St. Bernard Cemetery with full military honors. The Fred F. and Norman J. Bruning Post No. 607, American Legion, of Breda formed an honor guard at the church and cemetery. Personnel from Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, under command of T.Sgt. Ray B. Saunders, NCO-1c, served as pallbearers, firing detail, color guard and bugler. A-1c Mary L. Killon of Travis Air Force Base, Calif., was present as official escort for Sgt. Nieland’s body. The American flag which covered the casket was folded and presented to her parents. Committal rites were conducted by Fr. Zeman.

Pallbearers were: S Sgts. Joseph V. Nicholas and Andrew C. Hent; Airman Robert F. Noltenmeier and Manuel L. Ramirez Jr.: A-1c James O. Johnes and Sgt. Gary H. Robinson.

In the firing detail were A-1c Vernon B. Hayes, Michael R. Bray, Rolland M. Cape, Vernon Jones and Paul Cutierrez; Sgts. Dennis E. Wacknov and Abele DePietro; and S. Sgt. Elmer E. Mieth. The color guard included S Sgt. Ronald J. Krasko, Ronald J. Fasanella and Edward M Sinovec, and Sgt. John J. Osuch. A-1c Steve Hines was bugler.

Sgt. Nieland died Dec. 22 at Clark Air Force Base, in the Philippines after suffering a gunshot wound in the head Dec. 18. She had been stationed in the Philippines since June 1969. She entered the WAF, Sept. 29, 1967, and took her basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.1

HENRY MUEGGENBORG DIED IN OKLAHOMA
The news reached here Friday of the death of Henry Mueggenborg of Okarche, Oklahoma, which occurred on that date. Mr. Mueggenborg was a former resident here, where he has many relatives, but moved to Oklahoma more than 30 years ago. He married Dora Boes, a sister to Theo., John and Joe Boes of this place, and is a brother to Ben and John Mueggenberg residing near Sac City. He was about 65 years old.

Funeral services were held Monday at Okarche. Those from here who left Saturday morning to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Max Reising, Theo. and Joe Boes.

One of his sons, Paul Mueggenborg, who was visiting here, left Friday evening for home accompanied by Mike Reising. The later will return home with the Breda folks.6

Max J. Reising, 70, retired farmer, died at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony hospital, Carroll, after a 10-day illness.

Funeral services were at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard’s church. A solemn high mass was offered with Rev. Fr. Norbert Boes, nephew of the deceased as celebrant; F. J.P. Hausmann, deacon; Fr. F. Brady, sub-deacon, and Fr. Philip Dailey as master of ceremonies.

Daughters and sons are; Mrs. William S. (Amelia) Becker, Breda; Andrew Reising, Wesley; Gregory Reising, Mapleton; the Very Rev. Zeno Reising, pastor of the Catholic church at Alton; Lawrence Reising, Breda; Conrad Reising, Breda; Mrs. Wilmer (Rosina) O’Tool, Carroll; Mrs. Jerry (Leona) Eischeid, Guthrie Center, and Mrs. Walter (Bernice) Pudenz, Rockwell City.

The Very Rev. Zeno Reising is now on a pilgrimage to Rome. He left May 4 from New York with a group of priests from the Sioux City diocese. After attending the Eucharistic Congress at Barcelona, Spain, they went to Rome.

Mr. Reising was preceded in death by one son, Alvin; one brother, Louis Reising; one sister, Mrs. Louis (Mary) Woerdehoff; a half-brother, William Geier, and two half-sisters, Mrs. John Boes and Emma Geier.

He was married to Clara Boes Nov. 17, 1903, at St. Bernard’s church by the Rev. G.H. Luehrsmann.1

Appollonia Boes, 84, of Lake View, passed away on Thursday, March 7, at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake.

Funeral Mass was held Saturday morning, March 9, at 11:000 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wall Lake, with Fr. Edmond Adams officiating. Internment was made in St. Bernard Cemetery, Breda. Pallbearers were her grandsons, Marvin Ziegmann, Daryl Boes, Robert Ferguson, Glenn Boes, Kenneth Trammel and James Eischeid.

Mrs. Boes was born February 9, 1890, at Breda, Iowa, the daughter of Sabastian and Anna Keller Walz. She spent most of her life in the Breda community. In 1966 she came to live with her daughter, Mrs. Arnold Ziegmann, until going to live at Twilight Acres in 1970.

She is survived by six daughters: Edna, Mrs. Arnold Ziegmann, Lake View; Ermina, Mrs. Wilburn Trammel, Des Moines; Mrs. Johanna Greene, Des Moines; Alvina, Mrs. Stanley Eischeid, Bayard; Hilda, Mrs. Edwin Buelt, Muscatine; and Annabelle Boes, Des Moines; three sons: Cyril Boes, Fontanelle; Vincent Boes, Richland Center, Wisconsin; and Rufus Boes, Carroll; 48 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph and two sons in infancy.2

Leo Schulte
BREDA – Leo Schulte, 86, died at his home here at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, after being in failing health for six months.

Mr. Schulte was a lifelong resident of this community. A son of Clem and Elizabeth Schulte, he was born here Dec. 4, 1884. His marriage to Catherine Boes took place at St. Bernard’s Church on Oct. 4, 1910, and they established their home on a farm sic and one half miles northwest of Breda. Following his retirement in 1943 they continued to live on the farm until moving into Breda in 1950.

Surviving are his wife; five children, Edgar, Mrs. Henry (Hilaria) Pick and Urban of Breda; Ronald of Westside and Herbert of Des Moines; also 31 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; a brother, Edward, of Carroll; and three sisters, Mrs. Joe (Sophia) Koster, Mrs. Sarah Wegman and Mrs. Susan Steinkamp, all of Breda.

Mr. Schulte was preceded in death by a son, Donald; a brother and four sisters.3

Caroline (Mrs. Andrew) Nieland
Mrs. Andrew Nieland, 47 died about 1 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, of a heart attack at her home six miles west of Carroll. She had been in poor health for some time.

Friends may call at the Twit Funeral Home starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, where the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday by the Christian Mothers of St. John's parish, Arcadia, led by the Rev. C. A. Ahmann.

Solemn requiem high mass will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 18, at St. John's Church, Arcadia, with Fr. Ahmann as celebrant. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

Mrs. Nieland, the former Caroline Irene Staiert, was a lifelong resident of Carroll County. She was born Aug. 23, 1912, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Weber Staiert, at Carroll. She received her schooling at St. John's School, Arcadia and St. Angela Academy, Carroll. Her marriage to Andrew Nieland took place at Arcadia June 4, 1935. Mrs. Nieland was a member of St. John's Church and the Christian Mothers of the parish.

Surviving are her husband, Andrew, Route 3, Carroll; the following children: Sr. M. Justine (Ruth Ann) and Sr. M. Irene (Marlene) both of St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, Wis; Sr. Ione, Poor Claire Convent, Omaha, Neb; Mary, Leonard, Maurice and Alma at home; her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Staiert, Arcadia; and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Lawrence (Amelia) Wernimont and Mrs. Albert (Dorothy) Kennebeck, both of Carroll; Joe Staiert, Arcadia; and Irvin Staiert, Carroll.

Her father and one sister, Viola Nieland, preceded her in death.1

Rites For Mrs. Walter Nieland Held at Arcadia
Requiem Mass Offered By Rev. Mathias Stork, St. John's

Funeral services for Mrs. Walter Nieland of Carroll, formerly Viola Staiert, who passed away Tuesday evening, were conducted at 9 o'clock Friday morning at St. John's Church, Arcadia. The requiem mass was offered by the Rev. Mathias Stork.

Burial was in the parish cemetery at Arcadia, with cousins Arthur and Norbert Nieland, Walter Steinkamp, Vernice Bueltel, Vincent Kohorst and Clem Mueggenberg acting as pallbearers. Attending the rites from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Braun of Alton, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Reiff of Fonda.

Mrs. Nieland's death followed a two weeks illness. She passed away on the ever before her first wedding anniversary, leaving her husband and baby son, Kenneth William, fourteen days old at the time of her death.

Also surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Staiert, a twin brother, Joseph, sister, Dorothy, and brother, Ervin, who reside on a farm six miles west of Carroll, two married sisters, Mrs. Andrew Nieland (Caroline) and Mrs. Lawrence Wernimont (Amelia), west of Carroll.

Mrs. Nieland was born March 7, 1916, at Arcadia. After completing St. John's School at Arcadia, she remained at home with her parent until her marriage to Walter Nieland, which took place June 3, 1939, at St. John's Church, with the Rev. Father Stork reading the nuptial mass.

The young couple made their home on a farm three and one-half miles north of Carroll.1

Teresa Nieland, 90 of Carroll, died Thursday evening, March 6, 2014, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Marcy Anderson, St. Lawrence Choir, with Teresa’s daughter-in-law, Marilyn Nieland as cantor. Lector for the funeral mass will be Mary Baumhover. Gift Bearers will be Teresa’s great-grandchildren. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Shirley Molitor, Ann Christiansen, and Jean Knobbe. Casket Bearers will be Teresa’s grandchildren. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:30 p.m. on Monday where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9 a.m. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. Born on March 23, 1923, on the family farm in southeastern Warren County near Lacona, Iowa, Teresa was the daughter of Louis and Josephine (Kuhn) Wadle. She grew up and attended catholic grade school in Rosemount, Iowa and then moved with her parents to Carroll County where she attended Sts. Peter and Paul School graduating from grade school in 1935.

Teresa did domestic work in the area until moving again with her parents to Lake City, Iowa. On May 17, 1943, she married Walter Nieland at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lake City with Fr. R.H. Nemmers officiating. The couple moved to a farm north of Carroll until 1986 when they moved to their home on north west street in Carroll.

Teresa enjoyed making rosaries, gardening, and spending time with her family. She was an active member of St. Lawrence Parish, and Parish Ladies Guild.

Survivors include her children: Ken Nieland and wife Marilyn of Worthington, MN, Kathleen Schwery and husband Duane of Plattsmouth, NE, Rita Huegerich and husband Eugene of Fonda, Norman Nieland and wife Sherry of Carroll, and Lester Nieland and wife Kathy of Mt. Pleasant; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Catherine Wiederien of Dedham; and her sister-in-law, Cecelia Wadle of Carroll; as well as other extended relatives.

Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Walter in November of 1997; her son-in-law, Donald Lillig; her brother, Julian Wadle; her parents-in-law, William and Catherine Nieland; and her in-laws: Elmer Wiederien, Andrew Nieland, and Estella Hackfort.

Mass of the Christian Burial for Herman J. Hackfort, 69, of Route 1, Carroll, who died late Monday evening, December 23, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital, will be concelebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, December 27, at Holy Spirit church with the Revs. Roger Augustine, V.G., and Thomas Munn as celebrants.

Connie Irlbeck will be lector and Ron and Jim Schneider mass-servers. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Serving as casket bearers will be Harold Brincks, Gerald Schneider, Merle Trecker, Gerald Renze, Howard Pietig and Phillip Eichhorn.

Friends and relatives may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2 p.m. Thursday. Rosaries will be recited at 3 and 8 P.m. by Holy Spirit parish and at 8:45 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Hackfort is survived by his wife, Estella, Carroll; two sons: John H. Hackfort and James Hackfort, both of Carroll; two daughters, Barbara Hackfort and Lou Ann Hackfort, both of Carroll; a brother, Lambert Hackfort, Carroll, and two sisters; Mrs. Paul (Mercedes) Fasbender, and Mrs. Arlo (Jeanette) Jons, both of Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Rose Marie, in October 1969; two brothers in infancy and his stepfather, William D. Nieland.

Mr. Hackfort was born at Roselle on July 3, 1916, a son of John and Rose Hoffman Hackfort. He spent his entire lifetime in the Carroll and Roselle communities and attended the former SS. Peter and Paul school in Carroll and Holy Angel’s school in Roselle.

On November 30, 1939, he was married to Estella Nieland at the former SS. Peter and Paul church in Carroll by the Rev. Lambert Schenkelberg.

After their marriage, they made their home on a farm south of Carroll where he farmed for 51 years. He was a member of Holy Spirit parish in Carroll.2
